The design of the Glock pistol, which was the first to use polymers to reduce weight, made the pistol relatively light and easy to transport. The detachable seventeen-round box magazine was larger than most pistols of the era. The recoil from the nine-millimeter ammunition was completely manageable. The emphasis on mechanical reliability made the Glock 17 an attractive choice, especially for police and special operations units who use the pistol as an assault pistol.
Representatives of the Federal Ministry of the Interior approached Glock and asked if the company could create a fully automatic version of the Glock 17. The company was successful and called the pistol the Glock 18 due to its similarities to the original pistol, but obvious differences. Technically, the Glock 18 is an automatic pistol or pistol-sized weapon capable of fully automatic fire.
The Glock 18 is very similar in size to the Glock 17, with only a few differences. One difference is the turret selector switch on the right rear of the shutter. When rotated clockwise, the Glock fires semi-automatically, firing one shot per pull of the trigger. In this mode, the Glock 18 is indistinguishable from a working Glock 17.
And turning the switch down counterclockwise turns the Glock 18 into a fully automatic weapon with a rate of fire that approaches the dreaded German MG42 machine gun. In fully automatic mode, the Glock has a rate of fire of 1,200 rounds in 18 minutes.

While the Glock 17's recoil was very controllable, the 1,200 rounds per minute rate of fire was something else entirely. Early Glock 18s had barrels that released powder gases to counteract barrel creep. However, this increased the overall length of the gun and created a situation where the gas ports could catch on clothing when fired, which is not a great feature for stealth work. The Glock 18 also includes an optional wire-frame shoulder stock for increased accuracy.
A later version, the Glock 18C, has a two-inch cutout at the top of the bolt to expose the barrel. The four chevron-shaped notches cut into the barrel are designed to expel gases upward and counteract the upward movement of the barrel during fully automatic firing. As a result, the 18C has fewer surfaces to get in the way of drawing, and at first glance it doesn't look any different than a semi-auto Glock.
The Glock 18 accepts typical Glock magazines, ten to seventeen rounds, but with a rate of 1,200 rounds per minute, the pistol can empty a standard pistol magazine in an instant. To satisfy the voracious appetite for the Glock 18, the company produced thirty-three magazines. These longer magazines extend well beyond the magazine, making the weapon more difficult to conceal, but doubling the available firepower.
Federal firearms laws governing automatic weapons mostly keep Glock 18s out of civilian hands, although there are a few at shooting ranges and private collectors. Fully automatic handguns can be purchased by police and the United States government, but often without expensive training, even the largest police departments find it difficult to justify the expense. This particular weapon can be fun to shoot, but has little practical value outside of units like the ECO Cobra.
