The President and First Lady traveled to Fort Stewart to meet with Soldiers and families and sign an Executive Order (EO) that will positively impact educational benefits and opportunities for our nation's heroes and their families. .

We know that education is a big deal by traveling across the country - hearing from veterans, our troops and their families. Opportunities are provided through educational programs such as the Post-9/11 GI Bill Door.

And I know this on a personal level. Like many service members, I used the post-9/11 GI Bill to pay for my education and for my children.

At Fort Stewart, the president renewed his commitment to fully fund the post-9/11 GI Bill. More than 550,000 veterans and 325,000 service members received education last year through the bill and education assistance programs. In addition, nearly 38,000 military spouses have taken advantage of Military Career Advancement Account (MyCAA) benefits to further their education.

But sometimes...schools and opportunities can be a challenge. Many service members, veterans and families know exactly what I mean.

They go online to find the best school that fits their goals. They enter a website that looks official. They promised to connect with a program that looked promising. Unfortunately - all too often our soldiers and families are dealing with people who have no interest in helping them find the best program, but are happy to take their money. Our service is that men and women may have to make quick decisions. Sometimes recruits from these schools appear in the database.

As the President noted, the worst example of this is a Marine Corps recruit who visits a Legion camp and suffers from a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and the nature and severity of their injuries are critical. The stricken Marine could not. Don't forget the courses the recruit is enrolled in - but that doesn't stop them from getting the job.

But actions like that—and others—will end as a result of today's executive order signed by the president.

In short, the EO is designed to combat illegal practices that schools use to obtain military/veteran education benefits. It includes post-9/11 GI Bill benefits, tuition assistance programs, and all military/veteran education benefit programs, including MyCAA. And, these provisions are based on ensuring that students have the information, support and protection necessary to make informed decisions about their educational choices.

The President's signature today is an important step to protect and enhance educational opportunities for service members and their families. WASHINGTON, Jan. 24, 2011 -- President Barack Obama today outlined the scope of government. To strengthen support for military families, here's a look at several new programs and joint efforts to improve the quality of life and well-being of military families in the coming months.

"Today, I am proud to announce for the first time that supporting the well-being of our military families is a top priority not just for the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs, but across the entire federal government," Obama said. said.

Speaking from the East Room of the White House, Obama made the "unprecedented commitment" to military families with first lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jim Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden. Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates, the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Navy, attorney Mike Mullen, and senior government and Defense Department officials, including Army chiefs and their spouses, were also in attendance.

Stressing the importance of supporting military families, Obama recalled a visit to Afghanistan last month, where he spoke with troops and asked what he could do to better support them.

"They looked me in the eye and answered," the president said. “It's not about more equipment, it's not about more resources on the battlefield, it's really not about them.

Service members and their families have done everything the nation has asked of them in this decade of war, Obama said, and the nation must now support them as unwaveringly as possible. That's why he led a government-wide review of support for military families around the world, calling for a "collaboration of new initiatives" to better serve military families around the world.

This morning, the White House released the results of its nearly annual survey of military family support. From child care to health care to spouses' jobs, the report, titled "Strengthening Our Military Families: Delivering on America's Promise," highlights key issues facing military families and provides programs and resources that government agencies can begin to address. months to come. The report outlines four key areas that underpin all of the nation's efforts: improving the well-being and mental health of military families, creating career and educational opportunities for military spouses, improving the quality and availability of child care, and ensuring excellence in military children's education. and development.

Noting that improving quality of life is a priority, Obama outlined a number of programs that will focus on the well-being of families in the coming months. "We must not allow homelessness among our veterans," he added in a statement that drew criticism.

Another priority, Obama said, is the training and development of military children, many of whom attend public schools. He praised the efforts of the Ministry of Education and Home Affairs in this regard. The Department of Education prioritizes military families in some grant funding, and the Department of the Interior plans to create more opportunities for military children.

"We help our partner get that degree, get that job or start a new business," he said. "We want every company in America to know that our military women and veterans have the skills and dedication to use their incredible talents to make our nation competitive."

Finally, the government is expanding childcare options for military parents. "Working together, we can find new childcare for tens of thousands of military children," the president said.

In total, his administration has made about 50 special promises to military families today, Obama said. But the government alone cannot accomplish this task, he added.

President Barack Obama is stepping down as chief of staff after eight years at the helm of the U.S. military's most influential era, but not necessarily with the political support of service members. His moves to downsize the armed forces, move away from traditional military power and revise social policies that barred service from minority groups proved divisive in the ranks. His critics accuse him of trading powerful security positions for political points, allowing terrorists like the Islamic State group to flourish in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
