Taurus 410 Pistol
A weapon is a weapon of opportunity. Guns are not the most powerful firearms, but they are the most likely to have on hand if we need a firearm to save our lives. I spent a few months evaluating Taurus Judge spent and gave a favorable opinion on special revolver. .
Taurus Raging Judge 28 Gauge Revolver
The Judge is a five-shot revolver that houses either the .410 cartridge or the Colt .45 cartridge. This means true diversity. Likewise, the design limits the revolver's accuracy and range. As a pure closed-house advocate, the Taurus Judge has merit.
There are considerable arguments that it is very fast to reach the target quickly and take hits. this is true. I was taught that it's better to slow down and hit center hits than miss fast. This does not mean that hurry is impossible. it just takes practice.
Judges address this need by awarding injection charges. The Razor .410 is not a powerful weapon, but with the right load (this is the key) it offers a solid defensive option. Surprisingly, my evaluation indicates that the Taurus Judge can also be effective in protecting against nearby predators. My test piece was probably the most common Judge (there are several options), a steel-framed revolver with a 3.0-inch barrel.
This revolver is light enough, easier to handle than its clumsy exterior might suggest, and offers decent accuracy for those who practice. Fit, finish and list of good actions. The revolver has a red fiber optic front sight. This sight provides a good point of aim and aids in rapid target acquisition.

The .410 and .45 Colt are close enough that Taurus could design and build a revolver that accommodates both the .410 shotgun shell and the .45 Colt cartridge. There is a rifling, but it is deep.
As with all double-action revolvers, the Judge is easy to operate. Open the cylinder, load the chamber and press the trigger to fire. No slide in rack and safe to operate. The concept is to allow the shooter to hit fast with a high volume of shots. Individual buckshot pellets do not carry much energy, but the immediate impact of multiple projectiles provides excellent injury potential.
You can see the ill-conceived and hyped video of the Taurus Judge shooting at a target and the target being scattered and hit. Birdshot is a small shot class intended to kill birds without fail in a few hits. It does nothing for personal defense. Like shooting a full-sized shotgun, the Birdshot is great for practice, but not for personal defense. A load of 7 to 9 Birdshots carries hundreds of small pellets that form a pattern.
In a typical personal defense range, this model is 18 to 32 inches. This is 7 yards. Beyond that Birdshot is useless. Worse, a small shot only penetrates a few inches. A criminal wearing a heavy winter jacket may not be injured at all. At about 15 feet, a load of Federal 4 buckshot loaded with #3 buckshot maintains a cohesive pattern of less than 3 inches. This is the preferred load for those who use .410 loads for personal defense.
Taurus Judge Review: .410 Shotgun Revolver?
Federal charges are advertised at around 750 fps, but are actually over 800 fps on Judge. The total load is 292 grains. The Winchester offers a PDX load with a total load of more than 300 grains and three flat disc and BB shot loads. In this load the pattern is often very large (16 inches by 15 feet) and the disc hits the center of the target.
The Hornady .410 Defense load features a .41 caliber slug followed by two round balls. Slugs generally have a ball spread around the center and heading straight towards the aiming point. Patterning the shot with a paper target is essential to determine how well the shot spreads at 5-10 yards.
In my opinion, 7 yards is out of range for these loads, but the Hornady FTX Design bullet could help with a little more than that. In short, buckshot and specialized loads are useful for home defense and close defense against predators. Penetration tests with water jugs and wet newspapers have shown that these loads can cause serious injuries.
A bird shot goes into a 6 inch gallon jug and a few shots into a second jug, but very small. Federal 2½-inch shells with four OOO balls penetrate more than 24 inches. This would be equivalent to 18 inches of gelatin.
Taurus Judge .45lc/.410 Gauge Caliber Revolver For Sale
The Winchester PDX load shows a larger pattern. However, three PDX discs provide a 3x4 pattern of 15 feet. A larger model consists of 12 BBs. The Hornady FTX slug penetrates 15 inches from this revolver, and two round balls cluster 15 feet together for a total of 3-5 inches.
These heavy charges should have devastating results at the average magic seven yard range of 15 feet to maybe 21 feet. Judges must aim, but the pattern is spread enough to hit at 10 to 15 feet. This weapon is useless with shot loads over 21 feet.
Another option is to load the Judge with Colt .45 ammunition. To meet federal gun and ammunition laws, the Judge is a Colt .45 revolver with the option to fire .410 shells. A barrel is a rifle. The .45 Colt's long jump from chamber to barrel throat seems to limit both speed and accuracy. In some cases, this is true. However, my latest tests show that this loss is not always what we think it is.
The judge is powerful enough for the heaviest loads, including hard cast SWC bullet loads. Depends on how much recoil resistance you have. A good choice for personal defense is the Hornady Critical Defense. It is a 185-grain bullet with a reputation for elongation and penetrating power. Velocity is 891 fps from a Taurus round with a 3-inch barrel. Minimize recoil. This charge hits where you aim. At 15 yards, five shots from a firm benchrest shooting position produced a 3-inch group. This is accurate enough for personal defense.
Taurus M4510 The Judge S/s
Another option worth considering is the Winchester PDX 225 grain JHP. This load offers a big hit of 780 fps. This bullet weight provides a lot of momentum. The .45 Colt is one of the few guns that works well without expanding the bullet. This was evidenced by the Wild West and many efforts that followed.
A solid choice is the Winchester 255-grain lead bullet. This bullet from the Judge at 770 fps. (I got 778 fps from a 4 ¾-inch revolver I have on hand for comparison.) It has about 18 inches of penetration, which is great for personal defense, but has mild recoil. This is also a relatively accurate load in the 3-inch, 15-yard group. If the owner of the round expects long shots, the .45 Colt has proven scratch potential with little recoil.
Judge is a special pistol. It's definitely not a go-anywhere gun. But what it does, it works. It's worth spending some time exploring the judges.
