Eglin Afb Building 210 - Eglin Air Force Base is located in Okaloosa County, Florida. The land was originally a national forest until the US Forest Service donated 340,000 acres when World War II broke out in Europe and the need for an airfield in Florida became apparent. Today, among other roles, the base serves as a test site for non-nuclear air-to-ground weapons. More than 8,500 military personnel, their families and DoD contractors work and live in 2,300+ housing units at Eglin AFB. Eglin's host unit is the 96th Test Wing, and other major units include the 33rd Flight Wing, 49th Test and Evaluation Squadron, 7th Special Forces Group, 20th Space Command Squadron and the Air Force Research Laboratory.

Eglin AFB is somewhat isolated. The closest city is Valparaiso, a small town of only 5,000 people. Pensacola is 60 miles away, and if you're taking public transportation, it's a hub you'll pass through on your way to the base.
Pensacola Regional Airport has a small terminal that serves several major airlines. Flights here come from several major US cities, but your options may be limited. You may need to take a connecting flight to get here. Another smaller airport nearby is the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport.

Eglin PX is packed with a wide variety of shops and services. You'll find apparel, tactical gear, shipping and handling, optometry, a food court, and more. This is a great exchange to visit with many stores that cater to multiple needs in your life and lifestyle.

If you need representation in matters large and small, the law office is the place to go. Here, they offer everything from notary services to consulting with attorneys. Everyone can use the services provided here.
The Base Library is a great resource for books, movies, board games, and more. They participate in the interlibrary loan system. They offer study guides and other research resources and a database of language services. You can also come for a printer and WiFi.

There are several residences surrounding the base, enough to provide a comfortable ride. Each town and city near the base has something unique, with different offerings and amenities.
Cities near Eglin include Valparaiso, Niceville, Freeport, DeFuniak Springs, and Crestview. Pensacola, the closest major city to the base, is just over an hour away.
Valparaiso is named after the city in Indiana that is named after Valparaiso, Chile. It is a small town with a population of about 5,000. The city was founded by James E. It was developed where it was discovered by an industrious individual named Plew. When he leased part of the land to the US government, it became the original site of Eglin AFB.
Niceville is a city of about 12,000 on Choctawhatchee Bay. This is the site of Boggy Fest, formerly known as the Boggy Bayou Kefal Festival. Several schools are located in or near the town, and various famous people have grown up or retired here.

DeFuniak Springs is a US county in Walton County, Florida. The town has a population of over 5,000 and is home to one of two nearly perfect spring lakes, Lake DeFuniak. DeFuniak Springs was established in the 1800s as a resort town for wealthy developers and artists from Pensacola and now has industrial and economic activity.

There are no schools in Eglin, but there are several options in the nearby community. The Okaloosa County School District is nearby and has options for grades K-12, as do Walton County Schools and Santa Rosa County Schools. Eglin has a Child Development Center for day care and preschool and other private opportunities in the area.
Pensacola, like Florida, is wet year-round. Summer is long and hot, with a lot of humidity. Cloud cover is present, and clouds release the heaviest precipitation in late July. Winters are short and generally stay at reasonable temperatures, rarely dropping below the 40s.
