Without a doubt, the beach that runs the length of the city and beyond is the main reason people visit the Atlantic coast, including us.
We tend to go to Fort Macon State Park - more on that below - to park our umbrella in the sand, but there are plenty of places to choose from.
Atlantic Beach is home to some of the best beaches in North Carolina, so no matter which stretch of sand you choose, it's sure to be beautiful.

As one of North Carolina's most popular state parks, visiting Fort Macon is truly one of the best things to do on the Atlantic Coast!
Explore the mighty 19th century castle, walk the nature trail or just head straight to the beach to enjoy the sun and waves.
Oceanana Pier is also a great place for fishing and one of the best restaurants on the Atlantic coast!
Shop the boutiques on Front Street, learn a little history at the North Carolina Maritime Museum, see if you can spot wild ponies on Taylor Creek, and enjoy lunch.

Of all the things to do in Atlantic Beach, this is one you shouldn't miss: A day trip to nearby Cape Lookout National Seashore will introduce you to a completely different side of the Crystal Coast that you can't get by staying. on the mainland.
During the summer, tours run daily from nearby Beaufort and from the not-so-close-but-accessible Harkers Island (which, by the way, though very small, is a deeply interesting place with one of the most unique dialects of English in the US.
Be sure to climb the lighthouse itself (it's one of the most beautiful lighthouses in North Carolina) for absolutely magnificent views, enjoy the clear, shallow waters of the beach, which is more reminiscent of the Mediterranean than most typical beaches. Since only a certain number are allowed to climb Cape Lookout at any one time, you will likely have to wait a bit to climb.

It's not entirely clear how they got there, but packs of wild horses, distantly related to colonial Spanish horses, settled on this small barrier island (the most likely scenario being their arrival via shipwreck in the 1500s).
Horses tend to be shy and, as with all ethical wildlife encounters, a close-up is not guaranteed - but in the decades I've visited Shackleford Banks, I don't think I've ever come across at least a few beautiful ones. horses.
With a very affordable mini golf course ($5 per round at the time of writing), a spray pad and more, this park is a fairly new addition to the list of things to do in Atlantic Beach.

Pine Knoll Shores is home to a branch of the North Carolina Aquarium, which taught me a lot about the ocean, marine life and the local ecosystem as a child.

You can go horseback riding along the coast of Emerald Isle in the off-season, but in the summer the best bet is to go to Cedar Island.

Atlantic Beach's location along a long, thin barrier island means most hotels are located on or near the ocean, although the town's small size means there isn't much to choose from.
We usually stay in a homestay or occasionally rent a property when visiting Atlantic Beach, which is common among repeat guests (those options are the norm), but we stayed at the Doubletree a few years ago and absolutely loved Ocean Beach.
If you want to save a little money, you can stay next to the health on the ocean beach, but even in the worst case, if you stay on the Atlantic beach itself, you will never be more of a walk or a very short drive. from the ocean.
