The land was originally a national forest until the US Forest Service gave away 340,000 acres when World War II broke out in Europe, and the need for an airport in Florida was evident. Today, among other functions, the base serves as a test site for non-nuclear air-to-ground weapons. More than 8,500 Airmen, their families and DoD contractors work and live at Eglin AFB in more than 2,300 housing facilities. The 96th Test Wing is Eglin's host unit, with other major units being the 33rd Fighter Wing, 49th Test and Evaluation Wing, 7th Special Forces Group, 20th Space Command Wing, and the Air Force Research Laboratory. including the Air Force.

Eglin AFB is a bit isolated. The nearest city is Valparaiso, a small town of only 5,000 residents. Pensacola is 60 miles away, and if you're coming by public transportation, that's probably the way to get to the base.
Pensacola Regional Airport has smaller terminals that serve some major airlines. Flights here come from several major US cities, though your options are limited. You may have to change to a connecting flight to get here. Another small airport nearby is Destiny-Fort Walton Beach Airport.
You'll also find a Greyhound bus station in Pensacola, and since Greyhound lines serve the vast majority of the U.S., this can be a great option for you, especially if you're traveling alone. There is another Greyhound station in Fort Walton Beach.

You must bring the appropriate documents and identification when you first enter the site. Make sure you are licensed and registered if you drive to Eglin. If you are driving a rental car, you must present the rental agreement at the door. You'll need to have a few other documents, so make sure you're prepared with the latest requirements.
The first thing you need to do is report to the specific command in the order. Make sure you already have an ID for your family members or register to get a new one specific to Eglin. Stop by the DEERS office upon arrival to verify this and make sure you and your family can get in and out of the base without any problems.
The Visitor Center in Eglin is the first place to stop if citizens, family and friends visit you at the base. There are historical sites and museums in the base, so sometimes people stop to see these, and here they are allowed to do so. Make sure you send someone you know will be here first.

The Finance Office is an absolute disaster resource for all airlines and their families. Here you can learn basic financial responsibilities, how to open a checking account and manage your monthly budget. You can use the resources here to learn about long-term financial planning, including retirement and investing. There is room for everyone to learn how to stretch their money, and the finance office is the place to do it.

If you need representation in matters big or small, The Law Office is the place to go. Here they offer everything from notary services to consulting with lawyers. Everyone is welcome to use the services offered here.
The library at the base is a great resource for books, movies, board games and more. They participate in peer-to-peer lending systems. They provide study guides and other study resources and a database of language services. You can also come for a printer and wifi.

Cities near Eglin include Valparaiso, Niceville, Freeport, DeFuniac Springs, and Crestview. Pensacola, the closest major city to the base, is an hour's drive away.
Valparaiso is named after a city in Indiana, which is named after Valparaiso, Chile. It is a small town with about 5,000 inhabitants. The city originally developed on land discovered by an industrious individual named James E. Plew. When he leased some of the land to the US government, it became the original site of Eglin AFB.
Niceville is a city of about 12,000 on the Choctawhatchee Bay. It is the site of the annual Boggy Fest, formerly known as the Boggy Bayou Molle Festival. Several schools are located in or near the city, and many famous people grew up or retired here.
DeFuniac Springs is the county seat of Walton County, Florida. The town has a population of just over 5,000 and is home to one of only two spring-fed lakes that are circular: Lake Defuniac. DeFuniak Springs was founded in the 1800s as a resort town for wealthy developers and wealthy Pensacola residents, and is now home to a variety of industries and economic activities.

Eglin does not have a school on its base, but there are several options in the surrounding communities. The Okaloosa County School District is nearby, offering grades K-12, as well as Walton County Schools and Santa Rosa County Schools.
