Taurus 380 Gun - This article/review is about the relatively new Taurus .380 ACP Spectrum pistol. But before discussing the spectrum, it might be worth saying a few words about Taurus. (Getting to the point, I love my Spectrum - it's a very reliable gun). For those of you who aren't fans of Taurus guns, here's the thing... Before I review the spectrum, I think it's worth mentioning because one has a direct effect on the other.
Over the years, Taurus has introduced firearms that have captured the attention of the shooting public, for better or for worse. Truth be told, when I tell some shooters about Taurus rifles, they say, "Oh, Taurus, ah... that's a nasty gun!" In a similar vein, read many online gun forums and you will read similar statements. Important to note in these comments, however, is that the speaker may not even own a Taurus pistol, let alone fire one. Experts in these weapons based on what they heard or read, usually from someone who had no direct experience with them.

Am I saying that Taurus always impresses with their products? Of course not. I have had to send guns in for repairs so I first found out years ago that their customer service was not great. What I mean is that Taurus is under new management and they are trying their best to remove this backlog. A few years ago Taurus quality control was not so good. Weapons that need a few more coats to be ready for sale will be shipped. Most likely, this is no longer the case. Let's take a quick look at the history of the company and then move on to Spectrum.
Taurus Pistol Pt 738
Taurus was founded in 1939 as a tool and die manufacturer. It is located in São Leopoldo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Today, it not only produces firearms, but also has separate divisions that produce other products: metals, body armor, plastics and helmet production. The company is also big in civil construction. In 1968, Taurus began exporting arms to the United States through various importers. Now let's answer some of the questions that have been asked over the years about some Taurus revolvers - Why do they look like Smith and Wessons? Can't S&W sue them? The answer to these questions relates to the ownership of the parent company. In 1970, Bangor Punta, the parent company of Smith & Wesson, purchased 54% of Forjas (Forge) Taurus. This allowed for the exchange of designs, machinery, ideas and other aspects of gun production. This arrangement lasted until 1977, when the current owners bought Taurus and severed the S&W relationship. That's why Taurus revolvers look like Smith and Wessons. It should be noted that the flow of ideas is not only one way. Taurus helped Smith and Wesson with their engineering methods and designs, and vice versa.

So you can see that the Taurus Model 44 is very similar to the S&W 629. The only reason I mention this is to help you remember that Taurus was once associated with one of the largest quality revolver manufacturers in the world. And the likes of Smith and Wesson no doubt benefited from this connection.
Taurus Pt 58 S
In 1980, after Beretta executed contracts to manufacture firearms for the Brazilian military, Taurus purchased the Beretta factory in São Paulo along with tools, manufacturing licenses and designs. They even employed workers to manufacture weapons.
Ok We see how Taurus has built a gun like no other manufacturer since taking ownership of it. Some say they improved the design...I read positive comments about how Taurus moved the safety from the slide to the frame on the PT92 above. Whether you agree with it or not, the fact remains that Taurus is one of the largest handgun manufacturers in the world today, and has gotten help from some top manufacturers.
In 1984, Taurus formed a subsidiary: Taurus USA. The aim was to focus on the US market and make it easier to import firearms into the US (which has now grown to the point where many Taurus firearms, including the Spectrum, are made in the US). Rossi Firearms was acquired by Taurus in 1997, allowing Taurus to enter the long gun market in earnest. I had a Rossi lever action Model R92 in .45 Colt - a nice gun for the price and a couple of bucks. Another interesting point is that the Rossi website reports that Taurus has phased out the production of Rossi pistols. Now Rossi only makes long guns. One of the most accurate .357 revolvers I have ever owned is the Rossi 6 inch. This matter is nobody's business. One of our sons liked mine so much he bought one of his own. Unfortunately, they are no longer produced.
Taurus guns are cheaper than some other brands. Some of the possible reasons for this could be that labor costs in Brazil do not affect the bottom line as much as the labor of some gun manufacturers in other parts of the world. Due to this, costs are reduced. Another reason is that Taurus makes all the parts that go into their weapons. Independence from suppliers has its advantages in terms of savings.

Taurus has long been known as a manufacturer of compact, concealable handguns. Their foray into the .380 market undoubtedly made the .380 one of the most popular defensive cartridges. Innovative bullet design and ballistics make the compact .380 caliber the number one concealed carry caliber. As recently as 10 years ago, the .380 had some useful defensive ammunition, but that has changed. (Here is my article on premium .380 ammo). Some experts consider the performance of the best .380 ammunition to be nearly equal to the performance of the venerable .38 Special. However you feel about the matter, the fact is that the markets for .380 caliber pistols and cartridges have grown dramatically in recent years. Taurus had many players in this game.

Taurus called it a double-action-only (DAO) pistol, but the bolt had to be manipulated to fire again. The sights are basic (as are almost all Pocket 380 scopes), but it's a popular gun. These guns appeared before the Spectrum. The Spectrum was supposed to be released in January 2017, but delay after delay prevented it from hitting dealer shelves nearly a year later. When I read about it, I thought if all the hype was true then the gun must be worthy. This is the first "designer" .380 cartridge I've seen in all these colors, but for a long time (until recently) you could only buy black on black and gray on black models - a little about colors. Another major difference from the Spectrum and other pistols is that there are no bolt serrations—the grip panels and bolt grip area are covered in a soft-touch rubber material that actually provides a nice grip when you're cocking the bolt and getting weird.
